Kufa Makwavarara

Kufa Makwavarara is a Zimbabwean surrealist painter whose work explores the complex issues of identity, culture, and social justice in contemporary Africa. Makwavarara was born in Harare, Zimbabwe, in 1987, and began his artistic career in his late teens.


He studied art at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe and later at the University of Cape Town in South Africa, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Since then, Makwavarara has exhibited his artwork in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Zimbabwe, South Africa, and internationally.


Makwavarara's art is deeply influenced by his personal experiences growing up in Zimbabwe and the cultural and social dynamics of his country. He uses his artwork as a platform to address issues such as colonialism, nationalism, migration, and gender inequality.


Makwavarara's style is characterized by his use of vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and symbolic imagery, which create a dreamlike and surreal atmosphere. His paintings often feature fantastical creatures, surreal landscapes, and intricate patterns that reflect the complexity of African culture and history.


In addition to his artistic practice, Makwavarara is also a curator, writer, and art educator. He has written extensively on contemporary African art and culture and has curated several exhibitions in Zimbabwe and South Africa.


He is also involved in art education initiatives and has taught art in schools and community centers in Zimbabwe and South Africa.
