El Anatsui

Ghana

Born in Ghana in 1944, El Anatsui is a sculptor who is best known for his monumental, shimmering "cloth" works made from recycled materials such as bottle caps and aluminum cans. Anatsui's sculptures often take the form of undulating, flowing textiles, which are draped across walls and floors in a way that suggests movement and fluidity. His work often incorporates themes of colonialism, globalization, and cultural exchange, and he is known for his use of discarded materials as a metaphor for the transformation of waste into something beautiful and valuable
